W+B hosts lecture series at Portage Country Club
November 15, 2011
Akron, Ohio — November 15, 2011 — Akron CPA firm Winer+Bevilacqua, Inc. held its first complimentary YOU+ lecture at the Portage Country Club on Wednesday, November 9, 2011.
YOU+ is an educational forum designed to inform attendees about current and upcoming trends and regulations that could financially impact their organizations.
Attendees arrived at 5:30 p.m. for meet-and-greet networking, hors d’oeuvres and drinks.
At 6:00 p.m., John P. Susany, partner and group chair for Stark & Knoll Co., L.P.A. in Akron, presented on new union regulations from the National Labor Relations Board that make it easier for employees to unionize.
“John Susany’s talk was very informative,” said Winer+Bevilacqua partner Frank Bevilacqua. “He covered a very sensitive topic in today’s workplace — the right for employees to unionize, as well as what that means for employers. He also covered what materials they’ll be required to have posted come next year.”
At 6:20 p.m., Tim Walters, CPCU, CIC and president of Walters & Hanna Insurance Agency, Inc. in Fairlawn, discussed healthcare reforms such as the Long-term Care Partnership Program, the Medicaid Look Back Period and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).
PPACA reforms several aspects of the private health insurance industry and public health insurance programs. It increases existing insurance coverage, increases projected national medical spending and expands insurance access to over 30 million Americans.
“Walters’ discussion was very pertinent to our attendees,” said Winer+Bevilacqua partner Mike Hoff. “Healthcare is a major issue in this nation and it was rewarding to get his insights into that federal statute.”
At 6:40 p.m., Winer+Bevilacqua partner John Cassiday II presented on the Use Tax Amnesty Program, which grants organizations and individuals an opportunity to avoid heavy back taxes on out-of-state purchases when state sales tax wasn’t applied.
“When you make a purchase out of state, you’re often not charged consumer’s use taxes according to the state you purchased the items from,” Cassiday said. “This can create a dangerous and often costly scenario for those that have bought tangible personal property or services from an out-of-state location, and can lead to high back taxes and penalties. However, this program gives companies amnesty so they only have to pay on purchases made since January 1, 2009.”
“We’re very pleased to be offering this lecture series to area clients, organizations and community leaders,” said Winer+Bevilacqua partner Ron Winer. “We had some knowledgeable speakers presenting on relevant and apt subjects, and look forward to the next event. We also welcome attendees’ recommendations for future topics.”
Those with suggestions for future topics may contact Cindy Latham at 330.867.3578. The next YOU+ lecture series will be held at the Portage Country Club located at 240 North Portage Path in Akron in February 2012.
