W+B hosts YOU+ lecture series
July 23, 2012
July 23, 2012Akron, OH — On Tuesday, July 17, 2012, CPA firm Winer+Bevilacqua, Inc. held its complimentary YOU+ lecture series at Portage Country Club in Akron, Ohio. YOU+ is an educational forum designed to provide attendees with insights from experts in a wide range of industries, such as finance, insurance, health care and technology.
Presenters included Paul N. Catania, CEBS, PHR and Senior Vice President of the Oswald Companies, and Lenny Winer and Michael Fresh of WB Technology Services. W+B Partner Frank Bevilacqua introduced both speakers.
Catania’s presentation — “Keeping the Benefit in Employee Benefits” — covered the past and upcoming changes of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which requires most adults not covered by an employer or government-sponsored insurance plan to maintain health insurance coverage or pay a penalty.
“The law has been upheld, but now we’re waiting for the implementation details,” Catania said. “Many parts of the law still need to be defined, and a lot can happen with regard to the outcome of the November election. As for the role of employers, several different approaches regarding employee benefits are available depending on employee demographics and company size.”
Catania concluded his presentation by recommending that employers start having important benefit-related conversations with their employees now rather than later, as the completion of certain provisions and definitions of PPACA is just around the corner.
Winer and Fresh presented “Protecting Your Business Network,” which covered the many technology perils business owners and organizations leaders must face and resolve. Topics included employees as an inside threat; protecting against viruses, malware and phishing; how to protect data with on-site and off-site back-ups; and remote support and managed care solutions.
“We’ve seen the many ways that viruses, phishing and failure to protect data can negatively impact an organization,” Fresh said. “The people out there making these things are smart, but business owners have to be smarter. By paying attention, using a good anti-virus program and making every effort to protect your data, whether on-site, off-site or in the cloud, business owners can maintain the secure operation of their IT department.”
